New urology blogger

A friend and colleague of mine has joined the blogging world.
Dr. Marc Greenstein has performed many robotic surgeries with me including robotic prostatectomies, nephrectomies, partial nephrectomies, and a bladder diverticulectomy at Newark Beth Israel.
He is a leader in laparoscopic and minimally invasive urology at St. Claire’s hospital in Denviile, NJ.

Dom, I read your comment on Cigna’s policy for robotic prostatectomies.
As we all know their is a lot of interpretation required to code surgical cases and each physician has their our view. Technically, robotic surgery is laparoscopic surgery and can coded as such. In a way, hand assisted lap cases can be considered open because a hand is placed in the abdomen and it can be coded as such.
The insurance companies are clueless to surgical procedures and patient care. When they say a surgery is experimental, they probably think we have bunsen burners open in the OR and we’re boiling water. They would not reimburse us for that, too.
